What are the differences between screen sharing, screen recording and screen mirroring?

Screen Sharing

If you are screen sharing on a mobile or desktop device, whether during a call or an online meeting, other people are able to directly view the information on the screen you choose to display or share.

Screen Recording

Most devices nowadays have a screen-recording feature that allow you to record what’s on your screen (mobile or computer) and save it on your device.

Screen Mirroring

Screen mirroring lets you share your screen with another device’s screen, allowing you to display the information on your mobile or desktop device to another screen wirelessly. Screen sharing scams, also known as remote access fraud, happens when a scammer asks you to download a screen sharing or remote access software or app which they then use to steal sensitive information and even access your funds.

Note: Please be informed that this security feature to detect any of the scenarios above happening on your device (screen sharing, screen recording or screen mirroring) will be progressively introduced to all MAE app users, to safeguard your online banking security.

How does this put you at risk

Screen sharing and using your MAE app at the same time, screen recording or screen mirroring puts your account(s) at risk because of:

Exposure of sensitive banking information

Your account number, account balance, transaction history, personal details and more may be visible to others. This information can then be exploited for identity theft or fraud.

Unauthorised access

If you are screen sharing with someone who has malicious intent, they might try to capture your sensitive date or guide you into performing actions that compromise your account security.

How we protect the money in your account

Once we have detected that you have launched the MAE app when screen sharing on your device, other viewers or third parties will be blocked and unable to view your screen. This means that viewers with malicious intent or third parties will not be able to exploit your sensitive banking information. This prevents them from stealing your banking information or accessing your funds, further protecting the money in your account.

Note: Your own banking experience will not be compromised and you will be able to use your MAE app as usual.

How you can further protect yourself and enhance your security

There are a few ways you can ensure your personal banking information remains private to you:

  1. Before you access your MAE app, remember to stop screen sharing if you are doing so.
  2. Do not share any screen recording of your MAE app to anyone.
  3. Do not download any screen-mirroring or remote access software onto your device.

FAQ

  1. I am screen sharing and using my MAE app at the same time but the other person is unable to view my MAE app screen. Why does this happen?
We have implemented a security feature on the MAE app that blocks and does not allow other people or third parties to view or exploit sensitive banking information from your MAE app when you are screen sharing and using the app at the same time. This prevents them from stealing your online banking information or accessing the funds in your account.

  2. Why should I not screen-record or share my MAE app screen?
If you are screen sharing or screen recording your MAE app screen, this puts your account(s) at risk as your sensitive banking information may be exposed to someone with malicious intent. Furthermore, it is common practice for scammers to steal information using screen mirroring software or screen recording a victim’s device.

  3. How can I share the details or screen recording of my MAE app screen on my device to another person?
We strongly recommend that you do not share any screen recording of your MAE app to anyone, for your online banking safety and to protect the money in your account.
