Stay Ahead of Scammers: Essential Tips to Protect Your Credit Card
Protect Your Credit Card from Identity Theft
In our digital world, paying with a credit card is quick and convenient. But with that convenience comes risk. Data breaches, fraud, and identity theft are real dangers that can compromise your account.
So, how can you spot the warning signs and protect yourself? Let’s dive in.
4 Signs You Might Be a Victim of Identity Theft
- Unexpected Charges.
Keep a close eye on your statements. Small charges are a common tactic fraudsters use to test if a stolen card is active. - Your Credit Score is in Poor Standing.
If you have a good credit score but are suddenly getting rejected for loans or new cards, it's a huge red flag. Check your credit report immediately for suspicious activity. - Unsolicited Mail.
Did you receive a new credit card or statement you never applied for? Someone may have used your identity to open a fraudulent account. - Calls About Debt You Don't Owe.
If the bank or a debt collector calls you about an unpaid balance you're not aware of, your personal details could have been used to apply for a loan.
Simple Steps to Protect Your Account
Keep scammers one step behind with these easy-to-follow tips.
DOs
- Monitor Your Account. Regularly check your transactions. For Maybank Credit Cardholders, turn on your real-time push notifications on the MAE app so you can spot anything suspicious instantly. Read here to learn how to enable your push notification on the MAE app.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings. When using a payment terminal, always cover the keypad. Don't let anyone "shoulder surf" your PIN or card details.
- Contact Us Immediately. Store Maybank Customer Care Hotline on your phone -1300-88-6688 if calling within Malaysia and +603 – 7844 3696 if calling from overseas. These numbers are also provided at the back of your Maybank Credit Cards. If you lose your card or see suspicious activity in your account, call us right away. We can freeze your card and prevent further misuse.
- Shred Your Documents. Tear up or shred any old credit card statements and other sensitive documents before you throw them away.
- Turn Off Autofill. It's convenient, but storing your card details on a browser can make you vulnerable to hackers.
- Log Out. Always log out of your banking app and online web-banking sites, especially if you’re using a shared device.
DON’Ts
- Don’t Use Public Wi-Fi. Avoid making payments or doing online banking on unsecured public networks.
- Don’t Share Your Details. Keep your personal details secure. Never share your personal information such as CVV or card details to unverified sources or through unsecured means such as emails. We will never ask for this information over the phone or by email.
- Don’t Stay Logged In. Always log out of your banking app or the online web-banking sites. If your phone or devices are lost or stolen, staying logged in puts your finances at serious risk.
Stay vigilant and keep these tips in mind. Together, we can help reduce the risk of fraud. For further assistance or enquiries, please contact the Maybank Group Customer Care hotline at 1300 88 6688.
