As a global leader in Islamic Finance, Maybank Islamic Berhad (“Maybank Islamic”) has embarked on a high-impact initiative called the Shariah Centre of Excellence (“SCOE”).

The aim of SCOE is to be the leading reference point of Shariah best practices in the global Islamic Finance industry. The SCOE comprises the following interrelated components:

• Sound Shariah Governance
• Comprehensive Shariah Research & Database
• Human Capital Development
• Strategic Engagements & Consultancy
• Zakat & Waqaf Development

The above components have been successfully translated into several programmes:

• Islamic Finance Postgraduate Scholarships
• Sponsorship for Islamic finance publications
• Shariah articles in mainstream newspapers
• Collaboration with prominent international institutions such as the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) and IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF).

In addition, various Zakat-based programs such as Ramadhan Relief, Back to School and Academic Tuition Class for the under-privileged students were undertaken successfully.

Maybank Islamic also rolled out the country's first Corporate Cash Waqaf project worth RM20million - an affirmation of its global ambitions and the desire to make a profound contribution in the Islamic Banking & Finance space.
