Fraud & Identity Theft

Everyone is at risk of becoming a victim of fraud, identity theft, financial scams, counterfeit currency, and old fashion thievery such as stolen cheques, forgeries, as well as many more illegal activities. Criminals may also obtain your information for fraudulent use from everyday transactions such as writing cheques,  performing e-commerce activities and using a credit or debit card for payment.

Ways a fraudster may obtain your personal information:

  • Steal your mail.
  • Steal your wallet or purse.
  • Complete a change of address form to divert your mail to another location.
  • Rummage through your trash or public trash cans.
  • Collect your information through e-mail or phone by pretending to be a representative from a legitimate company.

Here are a few simple rules to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Bank / Credit Card Statement

  • Review your bank / credit card statement as soon as you have received it. Look for unexplained charges or withdrawals.  Promptly notify us of any discrepancies. You can also check your account activity between statements using our Maybank2u Internet Banking platform. The few minutes you spend on reviewing your statement could save you thousands.

ATM / Debit Card / Credit Card PIN

  • Think of an ATM / Debit Card / Credit Card as the key to your bank account. Do not give it to others to use. Never write your PIN on your card.

Financial documents with customer details or card information

  • Shred any documents containing confidential account information before throwing them away, this includes pre-approved credit offers, charge receipts, cheques and bank / credit card statements. This is also applicable even for closed accounts.
  • NEVER give out your financial information when it is requested over the phone, by mail, or via email.

Email

  • Maybank officers will never email, SMS or call you to ask for your PIN, password or other confidential account information.
  • DO NOT click on email links shared by unknown senders.  These links can direct you to malicious websites.

Antivirus

  • Update your virus protection software on your PC regularly.  DO NOT open files from strangers or unknown companies.

Before discarding your computer, we advise you to use a wipe utility application to overwrite the hard disk of the computer. This is to ensure that all data which was stored in the hard disk will be permanently deleted.
