Beware of Malicious Apps That Steal Personal Information

Please be careful of malicious apps that can steal personal information like your SMS TAC, banking username and password.

These scams usually take place when consumers are deceived by fake online advertisements claiming to be from reputable companies, promoting massive discounts, stock clearance, free gifts and more. If you click on these fake ads, scammers will then trick you into sharing your contact details, downloading a malicious app, or leading you to a fake payment website where you unknowingly reveal your banking username and password.

Here are some ways to help you keep your banking information safe.

How to spot these scams:

  • A person with an unknown number contacts you via chat message and asks you to download a file.
  • You use an iPhone/iPad but you’re asked to download a file via an Android device.
  • Your phone sends you a warning that the file could be malicious.
  • The app requests for your permission to send and view your SMS.
  • The app asks for your banking username and password.

What to do when you spot these scams:

  • DO NOT install the apps or tap on suspicious links sent to you via chat messages.
  • DO NOT allow unknown apps to send or view your SMS.
  • DO NOT ignore warnings from your phone.
  • DO NOT enter your banking username and password in suspicious apps or websites. DO always verify your Maybank2u security image and phrase to ensure you are on a genuine payment website.
  • DO keep your antivirus software up-to-date to protect your devices.
  • IMMEDIATELY call our fraud hotline at 03-5891 4744 if you suspect your information has been compromised.
